SmartTrade ‘App In Action’: Clydach Poultry

There aren’t enough Young Farmers! With the demand for food growing alongside the population of the world, you may find that the price of your food will grow too! A study done by Foodbank found that in Europe, only one-third of all farmers are under 35 and this portion of the population involved is decreasing. Figures from Eurostat and CEJA, the European Council of Young Farmers, point out that the percentage of farmers under 35 in the UK has fallen from 16% in 1990 to 2.8% in 2011. This is a rather worrying figure seeing as agriculture is one of the most important industries to human existence and has been for thousands of years. We need to get more young people interested in agriculture.

Technology on the other hand has grown explosively and is being introduced into the farming industry to help promote similar growth in this sector and help farmers increase produce and reduce waste. However, growth can only happen if fuelled by passion and that’s why we need Young Entrepreneurs to take an interest in Agriculture which will then in turn inspire others to follow suit.

A great example of a Young Entrepreneur doing exactly that is Callum Griffiths, the Managing Director at Clydach Poultry. Clydach Poultry are a small, family run business selling garden chickens and supplies, they also offer a very popular Hen Boarding service and are based in the small village of Ynysybwl (try saying that 3 times fast), near Pontypridd in Wales.

Callum has been involved in the agricultural sector from a very young age and won the Young Entrepreneur Wales Awards in November 2015, was the finalist for the Young Agricultural Entrepreneur of the Year, and is even shortlisted for Best Small Business Cardiff and Agricultural Personality of the Year. Callum actively promotes all areas of the industry, from TV work with BBC and ITV, secretary for the Vale of Glamorgan Show, and talks about agriculture through many avenues throughout the country.

Clydach Poultry have also started using SmartTrade App to take card payments after being a social and rural business. They don’t need a card reader with SmartTrade App and get to customise all their invoices and receipts for all their paperless paperwork. Callum said “It’s great to have flexibility; we can use the app in our retail store, on the move at trade shows, and even at a farm in the middle of nowhere! The features allow us to create slick and professional invoices with ease”. We are really happy to have them as one of our users and love the work that they do. If you ever pass by Ynysybwl, we urge you to pop down and visit the Clydach Poultry shop and you if you are paying by card, you’ll see SmartTrade App in action!
